Effective Yoruba Herbal Cure for Body Numbness

In Yoruba traditional medicine, Ogun Paja-Paja refers to a preparation used to restore lost or reduced sensation in the body. Numbness, whether partial or total, is a condition that disrupts normal daily living. A person may find it difficult to move their hand, foot, or even an entire limb because the nerves and blood flow in that part of the body are not functioning properly. Our forefathers observed that this condition could develop suddenly, after long illness, or from physical strain, and they developed remedies from nature to correct it.
ogun paja pajaUnlike modern times when people can easily run to a hospital, Yoruba forefathers depended heavily on the environment for healing. Through careful observation, they understood that plants, roots, and barks held active properties capable of stimulating nerves, improving blood flow, and restoring balance to the body. Their treatment approach was practical, plant-based, and handed down from one generation to another.

Numbness was not treated lightly. For forefathers, losing sensation was a warning sign that the body was out of order, either due to weakness in blood circulation or obstruction within the nerves. Therefore, applying the right plant medicine was both a way of correcting the imbalance and preventing permanent disability.

Symptoms Observed by Our Forefathers
When numbness set in, our forefathers recognized certain physical signs:
1) Tingling sensations or “pins and needles” in a part of the body.
2) Loss of ability to feel touch, heat, or cold in the affected area.
3) Weakness or heaviness in a limb that made walking or movement difficult.
4) A sense of stiffness, as if the affected part was no longer alive.
5) In prolonged cases, wasting of muscles due to lack of proper stimulation.

How Our Forefathers Treated Numbness in the Past
To deal with numbness, Yoruba forefathers turned to natural remedies. Their methods were based on careful plant knowledge and practical application:
1.  Application of Herbal Poultice –
Crushed leaves and roots with warming properties were wrapped around the affected part. This helped stimulate blood circulation and revive nerve endings.
Some of the needed herbs and leaf to treat Paja-Paja (Numbness) include:
1)  Ewe Abere Oloko
2)  Ewe Ina
3)  Ewe Gbodogi
4)  Ewe Orogbo
5)  Eepo Akoko

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
The healing process of Ogun Paja-Paja followed systematic steps to ensure effectiveness:
1.  Selection of Herbs and Roots –
Only specific plants with stimulating and blood-enhancing qualities were chosen. Forefathers believed the time of harvest mattered, often choosing early morning when the plants were fresh with dew.
2.  Preparation Method –
The plants were either crushed, boiled, or infused in oil, depending on the form of treatment needed. Sometimes a combination of external application (poultice or massage) and internal use (decoction) was applied.
3.  Consistent Application –
Numbness was not expected to vanish immediately. Forefathers emphasized regular application over days or weeks until normal sensation returned.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
•  Yoruba Approach – Focuses on roots, leaves, and oils to stimulate nerves and restore circulation naturally. It works slowly to rebuild strength.
•  Modern Medicine – Often treats numbness with injections, nerve stimulants, or surgery, depending on the cause. Relief may be quicker but usually relies on synthetic drugs.
•  Shared Goal – Both aim to restore normal function and prevent permanent disability, though the means differ.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
1) Pregnancy and Lactation –
Some potent herbs are unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Elders insisted these must never be used during this time.
2) Underlying Conditions –
Individuals with kidney, liver, or chronic health challenges should not take strong decoctions without special guidance.
3) Source Quality –
Plants grown with chemicals, pesticides, or harvested from polluted areas carry harm instead of healing. The source must be trusted.
4) Children and the Elderly –
These groups require lighter, carefully measured doses to avoid unnecessary strain on their system.
