Among the Yoruba people, Ogun Madarikan has a mysterious and highly important place in traditional medicine. It is one of the few preparations designed not to attract fortune or misfortune, but to keep the bearer in a neutral spiritual state — untouched by harm, yet unnoticed by excessive blessings that may come with hidden dangers. Yoruba elders often described Ogun Madarikan as “àṣẹ ìtẹ́lọ́run,” meaning the medicine of balance or satisfaction, because it allowed one to live safely between extremes — not poor, not rich; not afflicted, not overly favored. In ancient times, this preparation was mostly given to children by wise elders or traditional healers who foresaw that such children carried sensitive destinies or spiritual weights. Some were believed to be ọmọ àlààbò or ọmọ orí rere (children with good but easily attacked destiny). The Yoruba believe that when a person’s destiny shines too brightly, it attracts both blessings and envy. Ogun Madarikan was therefore seen as a shield that dims that excessive spiritual brightness, allowing one to live peacefully without drawing undue attention from enemies or spiritual forces.
The essence of Ogun Madarikan lies in its neutrality. While other protective charms (ogun aabo) repel danger by attacking its source, this one works quietly — it simply makes the bearer invisible to harm. Elders used to say, “Ẹni tó ní Madarikan kì í ní àrùn, kì í ní ayọ̀ tó pọ̀,” meaning “One who carries Madarikan neither suffers great sickness nor experiences overwhelming joy.” It was believed that this balance preserved long life, peace of mind, and detachment from the chaos of both evil and excessive favor.

Why Our Forefathers Used Ogun Madarikan
Traditional Yoruba cosmology teaches that both fortune and misfortune come from the spiritual realm, and excessive exposure to either can disturb one’s destiny. The reasons our forefathers used Ogun Madarikan included:
1) Spiritual Protection: To prevent sudden calamities such as accidents, spiritual attacks, or witchcraft that could affect others in the same environment.
2) Destiny Preservation: To hide the individual’s spiritual glow (imọlẹ̀ orí) from envious forces that might attempt to harm or use it.
3) Balance in Life: To keep the person steady, not falling into deep poverty nor rising to the kind of wealth that attracts trouble.
4) Peaceful Existence: To live in quiet safety, untouched by communal tragedy or disaster.
5) Childhood Safety: Given to certain children prone to mysterious illnesses, night cries, or frequent misfortunes, ensuring they grow safely to adulthood.
Symptoms or Signs Noticed Before Ogun Madarikan Was Given
Before elders decided to prepare Ogun Madarikan for a person, certain behavioral or spiritual signs were observed:
a) The child or person often survived disasters that harmed others.
b) Frequent spiritual disturbances — dreams of being chased, attacked, or carried away.
c) Episodes of sudden illness that defied ordinary medicine but responded to traditional rituals.
d) Unusual detachment from joy or sorrow — appearing calm even in crisis or celebration.
e) Occasional rejection during moments of shared blessings — such as gifts, promotions, or communal sharing, without any clear reason.
f) Persistent feeling of isolation or neutrality, even among peers.
These signs were taken as indications that the person’s destiny was too sensitive to be exposed. Hence, Ogun Madarikan was used to seal and stabilize such destiny. Amongst the herbs needed to prepare Ogun Madarikan include:

The preparation of Ogun Madarikan required deep discipline and was often done in secrecy. Only trusted herbalists or priests with clean hearts could make it.
1. Collection of Sacred Materials - Roots, leaves, and soils were gathered from places symbolizing both calmness and balance — such as riverbanks, crossroads, or under ancient trees known for peace and neutrality.
2. Spiritual Invocation - The healer performed chants (ọfọ̀) calling on the forces of Ifá, Òrìṣà Òsanyìn, and ancestors to infuse the medicine with equilibrium.
3. Preparation and Preservation - The mixture was ground, dried, or preserved in powdered or soap form.
4. Application and Instruction - Recipients were warned not to seek excessive gain, participate in evil acts, or expose the charm unnecessarily. The medicine worked best when the user maintained calmness, humility, and self-control.
How Ogun Madarikan Differs from Other Protective Charms
• Ogun Abo (Protection Charm): Fights and destroys the source of evil.
• Ogun Ajesara (Immunity Charm): Repels all forms of physical or spiritual harm.
• Ogun Madarikan: Neither fights nor repels — it neutralizes both good and evil influences, keeping the bearer unseen and untouched.
