Yoruba Herbal Medicine for Baby Health and Wellness

Among the Yoruba people, the care of children is considered both a divine responsibility. Babies (ọmọ tuntun) are believed to come directly from the spiritual realm (ọ̀run), carrying with them purity and the breath of life (ẹ̀mí ayé). Because they are still tender and spiritually open, they are easily affected by physical influences. For this reason, Yoruba parents and elders pay special attention to the wellness of babies through preventive and curative herbal care known as Agbo Jewo-Jewo fun Ọmọde.
agbo jewo jewo fun omodeThis traditional herbal preparation is designed to strengthen a baby’s body, cleanse the stomach, and protect against common infant ailments such as fever, catarrh, stomach upset, sleeplessness, and excessive crying.

In Yoruba traditional understanding, a healthy baby must sleep peacefully, feed well, and show liveliness during the day. When a child becomes restless, cries excessively, or refuses breast milk, it is believed that the body of the baby is troubled. Agbo Jewo-Jewo therefore serves as a medicine and fortifier, ensuring that the baby’s system functions smoothly.

Common Symptoms of Jewo-Jewo
Before preparing or administering Agbo Jewo-Jewo, Yoruba mothers and grandmothers usually identified specific signs that showed the baby’s need for the medicine. These symptoms included:
• Persistent crying or restlessness, especially at night.
• Loss of appetite or refusal to suck breast milk.
• Frequent stomach bloating or passing of gas.
• Greenish or watery stool, indicating internal disorder.
• Hot body or mild fever.
• Inability to sleep peacefully or sudden jerking during sleep.
• Cold hands and feet, suggesting weak blood or poor circulation.
• Dry lips or unusual body weakness.
• Constant sneezing or catarrh.
• Dull eyes and pale tongue, showing internal imbalance.

How Our Forefathers Treated Infants Using Traditional Methods
Yoruba healers (oníṣègùn) and elderly women (ìyá agbà) followed gentle but well-structured processes in preparing Agbo Jewo-Jewo fun Ọmọde, ensuring that the herbs were mild and safe for tender bodies.
1) Preparation of Decoction – The leaves were washed thoroughly and boiled in clean water. After cooling, the mixture was sieved, and only a small portion was given to the baby — sometimes mixed with a little honey or palm oil for taste and smooth digestion. The Healing Practice
The Yoruba worldview teaches that sickness in children often arises from different causes. Babies, being open, can easily absorb surrounding energies. Agbo Jewo-Jewo fun Ọmọde therefore performs a dual function — it purifies the body and fortifies.
• Physical Healing –
The herbs cleanse the digestive system, relieve gas, and boost blood flow. This helps the baby gain strength, sleep better, and feed properly.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment for Infant Care
• Principle of Healing – Yoruba treatment focuses on total balance — body and mind — while modern medicine isolates physical symptoms for quick treatment.
• Ingredients Used – Traditional care uses mild natural herbs and prayers; modern care relies on processed drugs, syrups, and antibiotics.
• Preventive Role – Yoruba herbal care prevents sickness through regular cleansing; modern care emphasizes treatment after sickness has occurred.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
1) Mild Herbs Only – Never use strong or bitter herbs for babies. The preparation must be light and gentle.
2) Proper Dosage – Only a small spoonful should be given, based on the baby’s age and strength.
3) Clean Water and Tools – Always prepare herbs with clean utensils and water to avoid contamination.
