Confirmed Yoruba Medicine and Herbs for Family Planning

Among the Yoruba, children are considered blessings from Olódùmarè, but our forefather also recognized the importance of spacing births for the well-being of both mother and child. Too frequent pregnancies were seen as a strain on the woman’s body and a burden on the family. To address this, they developed Ogun Ifetosi Omo Bibi — traditional family planning medicine that helped couples regulate childbirth without losing fertility altogether.
ogun family planningUnlike modern contraceptives that often target only the biological process, Ifetosi Omo Bibi combined herbs and discipline. The goal was not to “stop children permanently,” but to allow mothers time to regain strength, give proper care to existing children, and stabilize family responsibilities.

This practice shows the Yoruba understanding of balance: between fertility and rest, abundance and moderation plus responsibility. It shows the wisdom that even blessings, if unmanaged, can turn into hardship.

Factors Necessitating Family Planning
Yoruba Elders observed certain physical and social signs before recommending Ifetosi Omo Bibi:

1) Frequent pregnancies with little recovery time.
2) Weakness or malnutrition in the mother due to continuous childbearing.
3) Stunted growth or illness in children when births are too closely spaced.
4) Overburdened family resources, making it hard to feed and clothe many children at once.
5) Strain on the mother’s ability to nurture each child fully.
6) Marital tension due to stress from frequent births.

How Our Forefathers Applied Ogun Ifetosi Omo Bibi
When spacing of childbirth was necessary, Yoruba elders prepared remedies and rituals that included:

(i) Herbal drinks or tonics from specific leaves and roots believed to “cool the womb” and delay conception.
(ii) Bathing with herbal infusions, which balanced the woman’s body and prevented “immediate conception.”
(iii) Discipline in sexual conduct, where couples followed guidance from elders on abstinence periods supported by herbs.
Some leaf and roots previously used in preparation of family planning medicine include:
1) Ewe Orijin
2) Ewe Iyeye
3) Omi Ewe Ogede
4) Ewe Osepotu
5) Ewe Irewu
6) Ewe Gbodogi

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
When preparing Ogun Ifetosi Omo Bibi, Yoruba elders followed careful steps to ensure effectiveness:

•  Collecting herbs at the right time — Often during dawn or dusk, when potency was believed to be strongest.
•  Purifying and grinding — Turning leaves, roots, or bark into drinkable mixtures or powders.
•  Trial observation — Monitoring the first usage to ensure the woman’s body reacted safely.
•  Supporting discipline — Couples were often given guidance on sexual conduct and periods of abstinence to enhance results.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Family Planning
While both Yoruba and modern systems seek to control birth spacing, their approaches differ:
(1) Focus of healing —
Yoruba remedies emphasized balance, destiny, and wellbeing; modern family planning emphasizes hormonal or mechanical prevention of conception.
(2) Materials used —
Yoruba relied on herbs, roots, charms observances; modern methods use pills, injections, IUDs, or implants.
(3) Approach to continuity —
Yoruba often involved seasonal renewal of medicine with guidance; modern methods rely on continuous dosage or device maintenance.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
a) Pregnancy and lactation — Remedies must not be used once pregnancy has already begun.
b) Underlying conditions — Women with chronic illnesses needed extra caution before usage.
c) Quality of herbs — Leaves or roots from polluted or chemically treated areas were avoided.
