Among the Yoruba, sleep is seen as a divine gift — a natural rhythm through which the body repairs, the spirit rests, and dreams bring guidance and insight. When someone is unable to sleep, it is not taken lightly. Àìrí Orun Sùn, meaning “inability to sleep,” is considered more than just tossing and turning; it represents a disturbance of balance in body, mind, and spirit.
Our forefathers believed that prolonged sleeplessness could weaken the body, reduce mental clarity, and even open the door to spiritual vulnerability. Infact, there have been cases of people that died due to their sleeplessness. Because of this, Yoruba healers developed remedies to restore calmness, settle the heart, and invite restful sleep once again.
